Set in sunny Corsica, it stars Sandrine Bonnaire as a bored hotel maid saved by discovering chess. Kevin Kline is the suave American widower who teaches her the art of the game (his French is fine, his English better as he recites Blake’s poem “The Tyger”). Chess becomes the analog of bright, sublimated romance. Director Caroline Bottaro achieves a sharp feminist emphasis, though the last shot is a go-girl cliché. You don’t need to play chess to follow the story’s adroit, touching and amusing moves. In a wee role, Jennifer (Flashdance) Beals is still radiant. (2011) — David Elliott
