The starting point is the factual case of an extortionist under the alias of D.B. Cooper who, with his loot, parachuted out of a commercial 727 and disappeared without trace in the wilds of Wyoming. From there, this comedy-adventure goes on to hypothesize a fictional chase with the smiling outlaw pursued by a crew-cutted insurance investigator who also happened to have been the fugitive's superior officer in the military. The former character stands for free-spiritedness and sense of humor; the latter for The System and killjoyism. The ersatz Bonnie and Clyde musical score keeps trying to suggest that there's a folk legend in the making, but the routineness and monotonousness of the chase scenes would suggest otherwise. With Treat Williams, Robert Duvall, and Kathryn Harrold; directed by Roger Spottiswoode. (1981) — Duncan Shepherd
