More extraterrestrial copycats: they not only copy the outward forms of earthlings, they also copy Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, things similar. More precisely, they are stingray-like parasites that attach themselves to human spinal columns: they don't really take the forms of earthlings; they take them over. Old stuff, even so, but somehow retaining a trace of freshness. Maybe it helps that the script is adapted from a novel by Robert Heinlein, a certified specialist in the genre. Certainly it helps that it is directed with care and conviction by Stuart Orme. Learning the facts of life about this particular alien organism ("The trick is to find something they're vulnerable to and we're not": no truer for the characters than for their fictional creators) is fascinating in its details, and the lessons never decrease the pace, diminish the action, dampen the suspense. Plenty of each. Donald Sutherland, Eric Thal, Julie Warner. (1994) — Duncan Shepherd
