Inspirational homily about an orphaned English boy in South Africa in the years before the official enactment of apartheid (1948). He believes precociously in integration; he teaches English to blacks; he writes subversive song lyrics in Zulu; and above all -- as this is a John (Rocky) Avildsen film -- he boxes. Despite the triumphs, despite the exit into the sunset, it's chiefly a feast of masochism, featuring literal illustrations of Piss On You and Eat Shit. With Stephen Dorff, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Morgan Freeman, and John Gielgud. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
