The remake of The Poseidon Adventure trims down its 1972 forerunner by two words of the title and twenty minutes or so of the running time. The result is inarguably lively, although arguably so much so as to neglect to soak up the sights. And on an upside-down ocean liner on New Year's Eve, there ought to be a lot to soak up. Inarguably, once again, the special effects are improved (German director Wolfgang Petersen, who made A Perfect Storm and Das Boot, has been through some of these waters before), and arguably the cast can hold its own: Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, Richard Dreyfuss, and scrubs (Josh Lucas is top-billed) versus Gene Hackman and a team of almost all-stars.
