What made Roberto Benigni think he could play a wooden puppet of a little boy? (Did something maybe go to his head?) He has here moved forward from the "fable" of Life Is Beautiful to an out-and-out fairy tale, and he has waved a wand over the proceedings with some preludial narration about a magical place where "a child can look like a grown-up, and grown-ups can act like children." But he remains at all times, despite the clown suit, a middle-aged man with a receding hairline and a five-o'clock shadow. The English dubbing (a strained Breckin Meyer in the lead role) is a barrier, but the precipice was insurmountable anyway. With Nicoletta Braschi (voice of Glenn Close). (2002) — Duncan Shepherd
