The big-screen bow of the stand-up comedy team and "bad boys of magic," who play themselves, more or less, in a tale of escalating practical jokes. They're an uncharismatic pair. Teller's muteness is little more than irritating (and much more limiting than if the comedy team had, let's say, as many members as the Marxes), while Penn's voice is an irritant of another sort: a Belushi-esque bellow. A few of the "bits," like the run-around at the airport metal detector, are pleasantly in the spirit of an old Danny Kaye or Bob Hope vehicle. But the movie fancies itself a lot more sophisticated than that. Directed by Arthur Penn. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
