Insipidly formulaic overcoming-the-odds tale of a white BBW from New Jersey (Australia’s Danielle Macdonald in her film debut) who dreams of leaving her mark on the sexist world of rap music. The performances are all first-rate — particularly Bridget Everett as Macdonald’s haggard mother — but first time writer-director Geremy Jasper makes more bad choices than his misguided characters here. You know you’re doomed when a film about a streetwise urban rapper entails dragging a cute comic-relief granny (Cathy Moriarty) to gigs. And would a plus-size woman with Patti’s integrity really stoop to rapping about food? No-Spoiler alert, since if it’s in the trailer, it’s open for discussion: Helen Keller in another theater knows this thing is going to end with a concert. But if the film’s ultimate message is to do your best and be yourself and life will smile upon you, why must Patti undergo a complete physical makeover before taking the stage? (2017) — Scott Marks
