Neo-noir dark comedy about a suburban family man cum hitman in midlife crisis, developing a crush on a fellow patient in his therapist's waiting room. There is nothing credible about the hero's vocation -- his only underworld contact is his father; his wife thinks he merely runs a mail-order business out of their home -- and the tone is too wry and superior to approach true noir. William H. Macy, though always fun to watch, acts as if trying to recall and recapture the rhythms of David Mamet. With Neve Campbell, Tracey Ullman, Donald Sutherland, Barbara Bain, and John Ritter; written and directed by Henry Bromell. (2001) — Duncan Shepherd
