"In this world you have entered," remarks the CIA dirty trickster, "things are rarely as they seem." Indeed, sometimes in this world you have entered -- this world of Robert Ludlum spy fiction -- things are so far from what they seem that when they are revealed for what they are, the entire plot collapses. Plot exposition prior to collapse is, in any case, tiresome in the extreme. And Sam Peckinpah, back in the director's seat after a five-year absence, wakes up only for a couple of those time-expanded, multi-cut, slow-motion-happy action scenes. The profuse but indiscriminate sex scenes, on the other hand, are not enough to rouse him. With Rutger Hauer, John Hurt, Craig T. Nelson, Meg Foster, Helen Shaver, Chris Sarandon, Cassie Yates, Dennis Hopper, and Burt Lancaster. (1983) — Duncan Shepherd
