A supernatural stinker (call it The Odor, if you prefer) about the earthshaking showdown between the last of the Carolingian priests and the last of the Sin Eaters. The latter -- an immortal who in effect vacuums out the grime from human souls, granting deathbed redemption to the unrepentant -- actually seems deserving of a movie. He deserves, at any rate, a better priestly adversary than the studly Heath Ledger, with his impeccably maintained stubble and sullen monotone. He deserves better, too, than the sickly color and impenetrable murk provided by director Brian Helgeland. And he deserves a more imaginative presentation of edible sins than these see-through flying jellyfish. With Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, Peter Weller. (2003) — Duncan Shepherd
