An Agatha Christie mystery of no great consequence (if that isn't tautologous), with neither Marple nor Poirot in the detective role, but rather an American paleontologist named Calgary, trying to clear a dead man's name and his own conscience. Donald Sutherland handles the sense of justice and sense of guilt equally well; and the rest of the cast, though hardly all-stars, are capable professionals. The Dave Brubeck musical score, however, seems a bizarre and bothersome choice to back up so genteelly British a mystery story (even one set in the 1950s). Christopher Plummer, Sarah Miles, Ian McShane, Faye Dunaway, Diana Quick, Phoebe Nicholls; directed by Desmond Davis. (1985) — Duncan Shepherd
