The reason Lin (Angel Zhao), a brainy but painfully withdrawn transfer student, can’t seem to hold onto friends has little to do with her personality. She suffers from cognitive confusion, a PTSD-related syndrome that causes her memory to erase every Monday. It’s love at first sight for class bad boy Xu (Lin Yi) the moment she enters the schoolroom. With the help of classmates Song (Shen Yue) and Jiang (Wang Jiahui), Xu forms a “doomsday survival” squad complete with a memory book used to brief Lin on how to adapt. The plot takes a tragic turn when the real reason behind Lin’s disorder is revealed. The filmmakers are banking on audience amnesia. Other than short-term memory loss, why would anyone bother remaking a film that’s barely five years old? (This is a Chinese redo of the 2017 Japanese youth drama adapted from Matcha Hazuki’s manga.) If you can get past the silly premise — she remembers the sickness while conveniently forgetting the weekly memory flush — the cast is appealing and an abandoned planetarium atop their high school makes for a lovely romantic setting. Gavin Lin directs with a clean, bright style that will feel right at home on a television screen. (2022) — Scott Marks
