Faux fairy tale in which a poor Irish fisherman fetches up a girl in his net, turning his luck around and affording a companion for his precocious wheelchair-bound young daughter (“This town is what you call sartorially challenged”), who classifies the newcomer as a “selkie” rather than a mermaid. The film, often difficult to hear and at key points difficult to see, works long and hard to get you to suspend your disbelief, yet there’s no surprise when at length it lets you down with a splat — you and your disbelief. Director Neil Jordan throws the arbitrary arty camera angle into the unmagical frigid-blue grubby ambience. With Colin Farrell, Alicja Bachleda, Alison Barry, and Stephen Rea.
