The night in question witnesses the arrest of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette near the French border, and the movie closes in on that event in the illustrious company of Restif de la Bretonne, Casanova, Thomas Paine, and others, who are trailing along in the king's tracks. Overlong and overtalky, and the point of the exercise tends to be obscured by, or tends to be contented with, the impeccable period production. Aggressively intelligent, however, in a detached and witty sort of way, and periodically quite touching — especially in moments with Marcello Mastroianni's burnt-out Casanova and Hanna Schygulla's fiercely loyal lady-in-waiting. With Jean-Louis Barrault, Harvey Keitel, Jean-Claude Brialy, and Andrea Ferreol; directed by Ettore Scola. (1982) — Duncan Shepherd
