Hey, let's put on a show! -- a Disney musical about child labor, union organization, and strikebreaking in New York City at the turn of the century. And let's have it be in muted, monochromed color (for social, historical realism). And let's have a cast of thousands, hundreds, at least dozens of voice-cracking adolescents in competition for Da Tickest Noo Yawk Agcent. And let's have them sing songs that have something to say: "Pulitzer may own the World but he don't own us!/ Pulitzer may crack the whip but he won't whip us!" Are we dreaming, or are the studio bosses actually dumb enough to have given this the go-ahead? With Christian Bale, David Moscow, Robert Duvall, and Ann-Margret; directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
