More of a slice of life than a document, the film centers on the eldest of an orangutan family at a French zoo. The brief running time is devoted exclusively to the apes in their paddock. We are privy to voiceover commentary from a collection of patrons and zookeepers. But for all its knowledge about the animals, the static camera offers no real insight on the subject’s existence or personality. Ultimately, we’re left to contemplate the ethics of confining creatures for our amusement. (2010) — John Rubio
