Lovingly reproduced ships, a melodramatically fiendish Charles Laughton in the role of Capt. Bligh, and an upstandingly disapproving Clark Gable in the role of Mr. Christian. Pretty near everybody professes to favor this original version over the Trevor Howard-Marlon Brando remake, particularly those who haven't seen the original in twenty-five years and were very, very young at the time. The remake is actually much more for grownups -- more psychological nuance, more moral ambiguity, and naked native girls to boot. Directed by Frank Lloyd. (1935) — Duncan Shepherd
