It hadn't been that long (eight years) since somebody (Stephen Herek) endeavored to do a youth-appeal version of the Dumas classic. But now someone (Peter Hyams) has thought to add the element of Hong Kong-style anti-gravity fight choreography. A rather puny inspiration, and a rather poor one on the face of it, though the sloppy direction and muddy color tend in any event to diminish the differences from the old Douglas Fairbanks gymnastic style of swashbuckling. Justin Chambers, the supercilious snot in the lead role, is no Douglas Fairbanks, however. With Mena Suvari, Tim Roth, Stephen Rea, and Catherine Deneuve. (2001) — Duncan Shepherd
