Robin Williams, that thickset, hirsute Peter Pan, has hit upon another way not to grow up. He's an out-of-work actor and specialist in "voices" (Porky Pig, James Bond, Nicholson, Reagan, etc.), whose life-is-a-party antics finally get old with his wife of fourteen years, and who's booted out of the house. In order to see his three children -- he doesn't so much miss the company of his wife -- he dons a granny wig, a latex mask, a padded body suit, and a British accent, and obtains a position as housekeeper in his own former household. This requires the spectator to suspend disbelief at about the altitude of the moon. Or Mars. The fictitious Mrs. Doubtfire doesn't look much like Mr. Williams, but neither does she look much like anything human. All spectators ought to be able to find something to laugh at; the sophisticates will limit themselves to the "heartfelt" moments. With Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan; directed by Chris Columbus.
