Gus, the Con-Ed guy, needs to find a new mate for his ex, so he can stop paying alimony, so he can go partners in a bowling alley. There's a nice long moment of discomfort when the two exes (Matt Dillon, Annabella Sciorra) bump into each other in the company of new partners (Mary-Louise Parker, Vincent D'Onofrio). And William Hurt, just being his usual self, has the perfect affectations for a highbrow horse's ass. Otherwise, a slow trudge to a predictable finish. And for all the blue-collar posturing and sandpapery photography, no great genuineness in evidence. Directed by Anthony Minghella. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
