Joseph Losey's consciously Kafka-esque thriller about a well-heeled art dealer in Nazi-occupied Paris undertaking a manhunt for his Jewish alter ego. Alain Delon, in nondescript overcoat, hat, and gloves, cuts a figure which closely resembles his persona in Jean-Pierre Melville gangster movies, and which thus puts you in mind of a kind of movie you might much rather be watching. This one is quite handsome, sometimes strikingly so, but also quite dull. With Jeanne Moreau. (1976) — Duncan Shepherd
