Domestic crime drama about the well-deserved death of a wife-battering, coke-sniffing boor (a one-note performance, and a loud note at that, by Bruce Willis). Suspense is minimal, since the story is told in flashbacks from a police interrogation room; and the "shocking" ending raises more questions than it answers. But the blue-collar backdrop, when director Alan Rudolph doesn't soften its edges with romanticized photography (rosy light, slow-motion), coughs up some pungent testimony on the War of the Sexes: if a husband isn't a downright minus, he's merely a zero, and the gals had best stick together. The squalidness, the stuntedness of the milieu devise as sturdy a trap as many a better-built suspense plot. With Demi Moore, Glenne Headly, Harvey Keitel, John Pankow. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
