Sister, stepmother, and neighbor form the support group around a sudden widow ("I just realized," she announces upon her return home from the hospital, "that now I am the 'W' word"), and the ensuing hen party is invaded but briefly by a solitary cock: rock star Jon Bon Jovi in a smirking big-screen debut as a heart-throbby housepainter. The falseness of the overgreased dialogue is the more troubling when you know that, for scriptwriter (and original playwright) Ellen Simon, the story is essentially autobiographical. Being the daughter of Neil Simon was evidently the overriding life experience. With Elizabeth Perkins, Whoopi Goldberg, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kathleen Turner; directed by David Anspaugh.
