Sardonic study of a mild-mannered nonviolent serial killer (poisoned Amaretto is his weapon of choice), an ingratiating drifter who leaves a place a little less populous than he found it. Believable behavior from Janeane Garofalo, Mercedes Ruehl, and Brian Cox, but Owen Wilson in the lead role is more a literary conceit (and a chattery narrator to boot: "I like the details of a thing, especially if it's got a purpose") than a human being. Dennis Haysbert and Dwight Yoakam are mere figments of his imagination. Written and directed by Hampton Fancher. (1999) — Duncan Shepherd
