Two trampish pilgrims are led along the road to a Catholic shrine, with magical sidetrips into historic Church crises and classic questions, by the hand of the indefatigable Luis Buñuel. He is once again in his comfortable "Thank God I am an atheist" mood -- ironical, profane, captious, subversive. But he is working here in the French film industry, so he is also on his best behavior -- genial, urbane, charming. He scores surprisingly heavily just by playing the comedy with an even temper, without special emphasis. Much of the material is so worn and transparent, anyway, that the only possible interest is in watching the director preserve the poker face. With Laurent Terzieff, Paul Frankeur, Edith Scob, and Delphine Seyrig. (1969) — Duncan Shepherd
