Hard-sell inspirationalism. A brainless hulk and a humpbacked little crippled genius form a bond in middle school. More than a bond, they form a unit: a piggyback entity self-dubbed "Freak the Mighty." (We're supposed to cheer when they dunk a basketball in gym class, but the editing convinces us it never could have happened.) They take their own inspiration from Arthurian legend, and actual knights in armor start to appear to them on the streets of Cincinnati. It cloys, it nauseates, it rots the teeth. With Kieran Culkin, Elden Henson, Sharon Stone, Gena Rowlands, Harry Dean Stanton, and Gillian Anderson; directed by Peter Chelsom. (1998) — Duncan Shepherd
