John Sayles goes a step beyond the independent film, all the way to the foreign film, working entirely in Spanish with English subtitles except for some spots of facile comedy at the expense of a couple of American tourists ("What's the word for fajitas?"). The tale, proceeding at an inchworm pace, recounts the personal and spiritual odyssey of a do-gooder doctor, played with great presence and credibility by Federico Luppi, searching for some vestige of his help-the-Indians program ("It's my legacy") in the guerrilla-infested interior of a fictitious Latin American country. Caring and compassionate, but in equal or greater measure droning and didactic. Cinematic castor oil. With Damian Delgado, Dan Rivera Gonzalez, Mandy Patinkin, Kathryn Grody. (1998) — Duncan Shepherd
