One might have hoped that if anybody could discipline Liza Minnelli, it would be her father. Unhappily, he only indulges her, giving her preposterous dream scenes and handsome escorts and gowns cut deep to the bust of her pudgy, rubber-doll figure -- the very things he gave to Barbra Streisand (On a Clear Day), Liza's only rival as an inspiration to the world's Ugly Ducklings. Director Minnelli has reportedly disowned the film (but not his daughter), and this is the only indication that he has not totally lost his judgment. More typical of the film is the interminable sightseeing tour of Rome, a montage sequence which looks as though Minnelli ordered about six dozen shots to choose from and then decided indiscriminately to use every one of them: a bouquet of balloons, a child on a tricycle, a flock of birds, and on and on, ad nauseam. With Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. (1976) — Duncan Shepherd
