Why would a black man from Buenaventura, Colombia want to move to Bogota, a place where "the only black people are the ones who clean the shit out of the toilets"? The answer lies in this brief, motile story of low-rent (but high-tech) drug trafficking and its inimical relationship to family life of all sorts. Young Delio is tired of his crappy job in construction, and wants to do better by his woman and his son the future football star. So he signs on to help tow a torpedo full of drugs behind a fishing boat. Get to the checkpoint and get paid — what could go wrong? The dialogue is as spare as the story; the richness comes from the performances of stars Cristian James Abvincula and Jarlin Javier Martinez, whose characters shine through their faces before they speak a word. Also from the score — gorgeous vocals floating over shots of a watery trek into hell. (2015) — Matthew Lickona
