The essential thing to say about the sequel of Jean de Florette, especially to those who've seen the first part, is that both movies are cut from very much the same cloth. For the sake of those who haven't seen the first part, and who might be tempted to get right to the revenge and skip the initial affront, the essential thing to say is that Manon cannot stand on its own any more than could Jean. Where the first one didn't really have an ending, the second one doesn't really have a beginning, and they each need the other to achieve a sense of aesthetic wholeness. Four whole hours of wholeness, in fact. And the suspicion roused on seeing the first installment, namely that they didn't need to be two entire movies of two hours each but could have got by as one movie of maybe two and a half hours total, is herewith free to harden into a firm conviction.
