Amanda and Laurel. Runaway sisters from separate foster homes. The teenage one has gotten herself pregnant, and compounds the problem with the dim idea of kidnapping the knowledgeable and opinionated clerk from Connie's Baby Connection. The clerk turns out to have problems of her own. "Are you saying she's some kind of weirdo?" Is this the American Independent Cinema? Right down the alternative middle of the road: the wry abutting the skewed abutting the quirky abutting the wiggy. The glumness of the two juveniles (Scarlett Johansson, Aleksa Palladino) keeps the cuteness in check. With Mary Kay Place; written and directed by Lisa Krueger. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
