Seventeenth-century French history rewritten as if for TV soap opera: the secret twin brother of the cruel King Louis. (The big throb: the Queen Mother comes face to face with the son she never knew she had, and vice versa.) There is no worthy villain; the action is spotty, and what there is of it, isn't good; the clash of swords, in fact, is drowned out by the clash of accents (French, British, American, just among the Three Musketeers alone); and the lavish costumes are shrouded in lackluster color. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Gabriel Byrne, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, Judith Godreche, and Anne Parillaud; directed by Randall Wallace. (1998) — Duncan Shepherd
