It begins as a sort of Claude Lelouchian juggling act -- a backlot romance at Cinecittà studios intermixed with the storyline of the film in production, a biography of Italian writer and communist Cesare Pavese. Only it isn't as fast and agile as Lelouch, and the Pavese ball soon gets dropped and rolls under the couch, to be retrieved only near the end. What remains is a thoroughly banal love affair that's supposed to be the more fascinating because Peter Coyote is playing a much bigger movie star than he himself: synthetic gossip. Greta Scacchi, with her permanently baggy eyes and cocked brow, and frequently bared bosom, has some personal charm, but not much of a character to play. With Peter Riegert, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Berry, and Claudia Cardinale; written and directed by Diane Kurys. (1987) — Duncan Shepherd
