A test of stomach-strength: cold-blooded serial murder, a vat of gore, a bucket of vomit. Any takers? The story is told through the lens of a low-budget documentary film crew (grainy black-and-white), following the killer on his rounds. The complicity of the filmmakers-within-the-film and the personality of the protagonist -- a New Wave-ish nihilist, first cousin to Jean-Pierre Léaud, fey, animated, in love with the sound of his own voice -- combine to set up a sort of irony. A simple and repetitive and monotonous sort. Benoit Poelvoorde, André Bonzel, Rémy Belvaux; directed by Belvaux. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
