Based on the David Henry Hwang play, based on a true story: a young French diplomat in Communist China enters into long-term intimate relations with a Peking Opera star, never realizing "she" is a "he." A story hard to believe -- and John Lone looking jowly and beardy (and sounding like Michael Jackson) doesn't make it easier. And nor does Jeremy Irons looking middle-aged and jaded (and sounding properly British). The least to be said for it is that David Cronenberg is able to continue to be strange and perverse even as he becomes more culturally respectable and dull. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
