The satirical target (out of the Evelyn Waugh novel) is the deluxe American funeral, and the plan of attack is to swing hard and not worry whether the blow lands anywhere near the mark. The subject is sufficiently ticklish that a certain exuberant tension is maintained even when the swipes go wild, which is often. Seemingly every actor in Hollywood at the time of filming was involved in the project, although some of them were left in the cutting room. Several of the others survived quite triumphantly (Rod Steiger, Liberace, Jonathan Winters). And Anjanette Comer, alias Anjanette Newcomer, is nervously sweet and beautiful as Purity, Faith, and Fragility. Directed by Tony Richardson. (1965) — Duncan Shepherd
