Truffaut's latest update on Antoine Doinel finds our hero (the ever grungier Jean-Pierre Leaud) in the clutches of a new girlfriend (Dorothée sans surname) who achieves a great leap forward in the evolution of progressively cuter Doinel girlfriends (we first see her in a Snoopy nightie). At the last possible minute, Truffaut sounds some unexpected depths in his characters and ties up the plotlines in a tidy little bow. But before that, he pads the movie out with a cartload of clips from earlier Doinel escapades, and this raises the grim specter of lazy moviemakers everywhere, like pop singers, habitually turning out the-best-of anthologies.
