A too deeply submerged mystery movie by Michael Crichton. It's evident immediately that something funny is going on, but it takes exasperatingly long to find out just what. Mind-control through TV commercials turns out to be Crichton's primary bone to pick -- a well-picked bone, of course, long before he gets hold of it. Even his most original concept -- some sort of flashlight gun that hypnotizes and paralyzes -- comes to seem old and worn-out by the time he is through playing with it. Albert Finney, Susan Dey, James Coburn, and Leigh Taylor-Young. (1981) — Duncan Shepherd
