Led Zeppelin's Madison Square Garden concert (the distinct bulge in lead singer Robert Plant's pants, on stage, keeps this from being a family show) is reproduced with a high-quality image and high-quality sound. The problem of how to shoot so stationary an event is solved with kaleidoscopic and psychedelic visual tricks, with cinéma-verité peeks backstage, and with fantasy sequences spotlighting each band member in turn (Plant, for instance, sees himself as a knight errant, swordfighting his way up castle stairs to rescue a timorous blonde damsel wreathed in golden candlelight). These solutions, though, have problems of their own. (1976) — Duncan Shepherd
