Aimless days in the company of inarticulate Brooklyn street toughs -- and then one of them gets shot. Nick (Didn't Martin Scorsese Start This Way?) Gomez trains a cinéma-verité camera on the faces of his principals, and takes little interest in their surroundings. The unknown actors are very confident and comfortable in their roles, but they appear to be under stern orders to generate their own dialogue: "Shut the fuck up," "What the fuck," "It's a fucked-up world," ad infinitum. The upshot is a lot of latitude for lunkheads. Just because they have no idea is no excuse for the filmmaker. Peter Greene, Adam Trese, Edie Falco, Arabella Field. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
