The stranger who, in the nervous days before WWII, washes up on the Cornish shore, and into the lives of two elderly sisters, proves to be a Polish violin prodigy, whose sweet sounds catch the ear of a neighboring beauty on holiday, the sister of a world-famous maestro. A not very likely story. Nuanced performances from Judi Dench and Maggie Smith -- and the former's impossible crush on their young guest creates plenty of space for nuance. But the whole is unswallowable. With Daniel Brühl, Natascha McElhone, Miriam Margolyes, and David Warner; written and directed by Charles Dance. (2005) — Duncan Shepherd
