First love turns out to be a lifetime deal for Martina and Lucio. As teenagers, the young lovers (Ximena Romo and Sebastián Aguirre) spent their days together in a no-nonsense Mexican Catholic school, falling in and out of love. Then, after 25 years out of sight but not out of mind, the same wind of fate that ripped the pair apart reunites them, even as they each feign being otherwise committed. The four lead performances keep what might have been a contrived comedy of errors on an even keel. Writer-director Manolo Caro puts care in his character building while peppering the proceedings with enough off-kilter laughs to keep things slightly unhinged. And then out of nowhere emerges a tender, non-exploitive scene of defloration. Sadly, the reason behind the couple’s split is kept a mystery until the end, and the manner in which it’s revealed is a bit of a letdown. In Spanish with English subtitles. (2016) — Scott Marks
