Somewhat on the principle of it taking a thief to catch a thief, a French businessman sends a klutz to find a klutz: his own daughter who has disappeared in Acapulco. (There proves to be little difficulty finding Mexicans who can converse fluently in French.) Pierre Richard, as the second klutz, is in charge of the rudimentary slapstick; and Gerard Depardieu, as the private eye who babysits him, gets much the better of it in the reactive role (but never over-reactive), with a range of emotion that often matches that of the disgruntled moviegoer. With Jorge Luke and Pedro Armendariz, Jr.; written and directed by Francis Veber. (1981) — Duncan Shepherd
