It takes a strong couple to weather life’s battery of unfolding events, particularly when the topic shifts from the petty (pubic hair on a cake of Ivory) to what to do when one’s ex, and the absentee father of their son, is given a death sentence. If Chito refers to Teresa (Perla Bautista) as “Mother,” then why call Celso (Menggie Cobarrubias), the man who shares her bed, “Uncle”? And why would Celso end the day by telling his beloved Teresa, “I hope that when you wake up tomorrow, you’ll still love me”? Because tomorrow, Bene (Dante Rivero), the poor slug who opened the picture pampering a gamecock, will begin living his remaining days in their care. I may not be strong enough to live my life in accordance to the rules set down by these great-hearted characters, but damn if I’m not grateful to have them point out the error of my ways. Nor can I recall the last time a film did such a splendid job of equating tragedy with food. Directed with an unpretentious understanding of romantic drama by Carlo Catu. (2018) — Scott Marks
