Well, it worked for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. To finish out its trilogy about a pudgy, Type-B panda (Jack Black) with a battle-ready, Type-A destiny, Dreamworks adds a long-absent father (Bryan Cranston) and amps up Part 1’s storyline. In Indiana Jones, the Ark of the Covenant got replaced by the Holy Grail. Here, the bear who became the Dragon Warrior in order to save his village must really become the Dragon Warrior in order to save all of China. And while his enemy in Part 1 was an escapee from the world’s best-fortified prison, this time it’s an escapee from the extra-dimensional spirit realm. The list goes on (and on). In any case, the lesson remains the same: be the best you can be. Sigh. Once again, it’s fun to look at and full of wisecracks, which, coupled with the dueling-dads subplot, may be enough to see you through. (2016) — Matthew Lickona
