Almodóvar. And if that doesn't tell you already whether or not it's for you, then maybe the viability of rape as a comic topic can help you decide. Not just a flippant remark on it, as in the same director's Matador, but an endlessly grinding and graphic acting-out of it. Final payoff: the interrupted rapist flees to the apartment balcony to relieve himself manually, and a single drop of semen splats on the upturned face of the TV hostess who, in spaceman jumpsuit and camera helmet, prowls the streets on a motorcycle in search of bad news. The garish dresses, earrings, couches, paintings, etc., can be enjoyed by a somewhat broader audience. Or could be if all enjoyment were not spoiled by the prevailing comic policy of shoot first, ask questions never. Veronica Forque, Peter Coyote, Victoria Abril, Alex Casanovas.
