The chain-rattling spirit of The Golden Age of Television rattles on: a foursquare (or just plain square) presentation of the facts in the case of an East German refugee who hijacked a Polish airliner to fly to freedom. Can hijacking, even in a sympathetic cause, be condoned? Can hiding expository cards up the sleeve -- or more bluntly, can concealing crucial evidence -- be condoned even in that same cause? One of these cards is played by -- or just is -- Sean Penn, a Surprise Witness with a surprising German accent, under the direction of his father Leo Penn. (Was Sean ever so well behaved around the house, Leo?) Martin Sheen, who co-produced, gets to do a pretty fair impression of Jimmy Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy, before donning his judicial robes and the weight of the world. (1988) — Duncan Shepherd
