Nonsense to do with a wide-eyed Harry Langdon-like bus driver who, with the addition of a mole on his cheek and a toothpick in his mouth, is a dead ringer for a sequestered Mafioso. Roberto Benigni's gifts for physical comedy are abundant enough to keep the idea alive for the duration, and his writing and directing (must we bring up Chaplin in the same breath?) make effective use of hesitation and delay. A huge hit in Italy, it does not cross the Atlantic as out-loud funny, but possibly as under-the-breath funny. With Nicoletta Braschi. (1992) — Duncan Shepherd
