This blind-lady-in-distress thriller marks a departure for writer-director Bruce Robinson, a departure from the United Kingdom for one thing (Withnail and I, How to Get Ahead in Advertising), and a departure from the side road and the banana peel for a couple of others. The detective work on the trail of a possible serial killer in Eureka, Ca., is too weakly linked to be very involving, and the ultimate solution to the mystery would be laughable if it weren't so lazy. But there is a nice surprise at the end, a scrupulously aboveboard and prepared-for surprise, but a surprise all the same. It deserved a better movie before it.
